San Francisco Claims US Record On Waste Diversion

Mayor Gavin Newsom is claiming the city has set national records in keeping waste from being sent to a landfill. The mayor said on Friday that San Francisco hit what's called a landfill diversion rate of 77 percent for 2008, the last year records were available. Officials say it was the highest such rate for a city in the nation. Full Article

Is Chicago Throwing Away $1 Million on Recycling Carts?

Thousands of blue recycling carts -- with a pricetag of nearly $1 million -- are stashed away in a Far South Side warehouse because City Hall bought them to make the citywide switch to curbside recycling, but ran out of money one-third of the way through. The Daley administration acknowledged having a stockpile of "roughly 22,000 carts" at a cost of $45-per-container. Full Article

Oregon Paint Recycling Program a National First

Oregon's first-in-the-nation environmental plan for recycling paint goes into effect on Thursday, and consumers will see the price of paint increase with it. The paint "take back" program was passed by the Legislature in 2009 after similar measures failed in Vermont and Connecticut. Full Article

Recyclable Plastic Boat Sets Sail

A boat aptly called the Plastiki, made out of 12,500 recyclable plastic bottles filled with carbon dioxide, has set sail for a great voyage through the Pacific. While it seems like an extreme stunt, the journey has more of a purpose than just seeing if a plastic boat can make the trip. By now, many of us have heard about the giant collection of floating plastic known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The large aquatic dump is located in the North Pacific Gyre, one of the five major vortices of currents in the world's oceans. It is twice the size of Texas and contains billions of tiny pieces of plastic. Full Article

This concept is gaining ground as more businesses, utilities and government agencies offer cash and other incentives -- like cupcakes and massages -- to encourage conservation. One company, RecycleBank, announced Wednesday that its recycling points can now be used for eBay purchases. Another, Earth Aid, is offering an array of prizes that include cocktail-mixing classes and for super-duper savers in Philadelphia, a weekend bed-and-breakfast package at the Four Seasons Hotel. City of Atlanta Launches Pilot Incentive Based Recycling Program

The City of Atlanta announced that a select group of Atlanta residents will soon be rewarded for their curbside recycling efforts. In an effort to encourage proper recycling habits, boost recycling participation, reduce the amount of recyclables being sent to area landfills and save taxpayer money, City officials introduced the pilot rewards program as an opportune way to move towards a greener, cleaner Atlanta.
